Breaking news:  President-elect Obama has named Susan Rice U.S. ambassador to the U.N.  Here’s what she has to say about Darfur.

Genocide in Darfur

Welcome to our Darfurblog.  If you’re in 3rd hour, you’re at the right place.

  • This project involves studying an ongoing genocide.  Some of the topics include violent and graphic subject matter.
  • Most of the work for this project will be completed at home.
  • You’ll need to complete the assignments and then respond to them.  Internet access is needed.  Please let me know if that becomes a problem for you.
  • Please do not include any personal information (last name, phone number, address) on this site.  While it is highly unlikely that anyone dangerous would access this site, it is better to be overly cautious and safe when using the Internet.
  • Please follow the calendar for completing the assignments.  You may work ahead, but please do not post your comments until the given time frame for each assignment.  (For example, if an assignment is due on Monday, you can begin posting the next assignment on that Monday, but you can’t post the one after that.)

DIRECTIONS:  Please read these directions for writing comments (which you must do for each assignment) now and again as you complete each assignment.

THE PROCESS OF WRITING A COMMENT

When writing a comment, be sure to…

1) First write it as a word processing document.  That way you can save it on your computer.  I’d like you to have a copy of it just in case.  Also, it will allow you to revise and edit before you post it.  Posted work should be final draft quality.  Please follow these steps.

  1. Read/view the assignment.
  2. Think about it.
  3. Write a rough draft.
  4. Do some rereading and more thinking.
  5. Revise and edit.
  6. Post your comment.

2)  Please use the checklist below to make sure you have a well written comment.

CONTENT

  1. Include ALL of the information in the directions for each assignment.
  2. Refer to what you have read/viewed.  Your comments need to be a combination of facts you’ve learned and your opinions.  Use information you’ve learned from the assignment.  Be specific.
  3. Be accurate.  Check your facts before you post your comment.
  4. Feel free to do extra research.  If you do, please cite your sources.  (Write the web addresses.)

MECHANICS

  1. Check your spelling. (Remember to think about words which SpellCheck won’t catch such as there, they’re, and their.)
  2. Check your punctuation.  Use complete sentences.  Avoid run-ons.
  3. Check your grammar.
  4. Check your capitalization.  Capitalize “I” and all proper nouns.

ASSESSMENT

You’ll do a lot of reading and thinking for this project.  You’ll also need to write 10 comments, one for each of the ten assignments.  Each comment is worth 25 points.  The 25 points will be earned as follows:

  • 10 points for demonstrating in your comment that you’ve read/viewed the assignment
  • 10 points for being specific and accurate in your comments
  • 5 points for mechanics

Please do your work on time.  You’ll lose 5 points for EVERY assignment which is turned in late (after midnight of the due date).
